The Challenge
Late in 2009,
Jad Limcaco of Design Informer issued a challenge on Smashing Magazine. He challenged readers to
improve their skills by designing something everyday in 2010.
Someone once said, “Practice makes perfect“. While that statement might not be completely true,
I do believe that practice makes you better. That is why in this blog post, I would like to
propose something to every designer: Why not try to design something every day for one year? -Jad Limcaco
In taking the challenge, I've found that my kids think that it's
a great idea too. Often one or more of them will sit down with me and join me in creating.
It's been a great experience for us all and I've posted their work up here as well. Please take a look around and
leave a comment if you like the art or feel inspired to do something yourself. We'd love to know.

Dylan Swap
I remember as a kid, my parents would on occasion listen to Bob Dylan. I myself in my typical way would croon ".. and I can't sing.. at all." In my best Dylan-esque style when ever I heard a song of his come on. I didn't really bother listening to the words. So I came upon Bob Dylan indirectly. I listened to, and enjoyed All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were my favorite band and I liked the strange song they sang called Subterranean Homesick Blues . It was only later that I discovered that both of these songs were written my Bob Dylan. It was at point that I started listening to Bob Dylan. I'm no huge fan, but I now respect him for his songwriting ability and only rarely make fun of his singing voice.
I was looking for an ATC swap that was a challenge and I found it. In this swap, the cards should be taken from Bob Dylan song lyrics. Two of them ended up coming from Subterranean Homesick Blues and one from Arthur McBride .
My Cards for the Swap
Look Out Kid
Lyrics by Bob Dylan
Look out kid
It’s somethin’ you did
God knows when
But you’re doin’ it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin’ for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
By the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten
Pavement
Lyrics by Bob Dylan
Johnny’s in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I’m on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he’s got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Sargent Napper and Corporal Vamp
Lyrics by Bob Dylan
Oh, me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride,
As we went a-walkin' down by the seaside,
Mark now what followed and what did betide,
For it bein' on Christmas mornin'.
Now, for recreation, we went on a tramp,
And we met Sergeant Napper and Corporal Vamp
And a little wee drummer intending to camp,
For the day bein' pleasant and charmin'.
"Good morning, good morning," the Sergeant he cried.
"And the same to you, gentlemen," we did reply,
Intending no harm but meant to pass by,
For it bein' on Christmas mornin'.
"But," says he, "My fine fellows, if you will enlist,
Ten guineas in gold I'll stick to your fist,
And a crown in the bargain for to kick up the dust,
And drink the king's health in the morning.

Sea Dragon Swap
Well, until I signed up for this swap challenge, I'd never heard of leafy or any other kind of sea dragon. Except for the big water-breathing kind. So what is a Leafy Sea Dragon? They are apparently a relative of the sea horse except they are larger, their tails don't curl the same way and they have these leafy looking appendages that serve as a camoflauge. They are native to the areas around Southern Austrailia.

Out of the Darkness
This Sea Dragon is emerging from the mirky depths and just coming into view.
Floatin'
One thing that is kind of neat about these little critters is that they appear to simply float around swiveling up and down and side to side at will.
Sea Dragon Profile
Here's a simple profile of a Sea Dragon.

Early Chocobo Chick Sightings
I am currently playing Final Fantasy XIII. Sazh , one of the characters has a baby chocobo (like a big chicken) that lives in his hair. I've noticed the bird in the hair theme in a couple of other places too, like Pucca , which is a great show that we all enjoy.
I was curious what the historical sources might be for people having birds that live on their heads. After many hours of research, I uncovered this image from the Middle Ages of a man who has a bird that has nested on his head. Apparently there is some historical fact to back this up after all

Walking Past the Sushi Shop
This cat is walking through the streets of Tokyo on his way home from work (not sure if it's the office or if he is a Yakuza boss). On the way his nose leads him to the scent of a sushi restaraunt where the delicate scent of fresh sashimi awaits him inside.

Gardening On the Moon
My younger kids are bringing home cups with lima bean sprouts in them as part of a school project to learn about plants. I suppose it's also because this last week was also Earth Week. What would happen if we were to add vegetation to places that currently don't have plant life?
